THE MEDICAL COUNCIL CORRECTS ITS DEFAMATORY STATEMENTS AGAINST DR WISLANG

Upon a request Dr Wislang made under the New Zealand Privacy Act 1993, the Medical Council of New Zealand has corrected two defamatory statements that had been on its own records since 1999 and which it had notified to 11 overseas medical regulatory authorities and 4 New Zealand health agencies, without his knowledge. The total number of publications of the defamatory statements was 30.

The overseas regulatory authorities were in Australia, Ireland, Britain and South Africa. In October and December 1999
the Medical Council of New Zealand had falsely stated to those authorities that Dr Wislang had been disciplined in relation to a charge of disgraceful conduct in a professional respect, when he had not.

The recently corrected notifications state that the corrections were “made under the provisions of sub-clause 1(a) of Information Privacy Principle 7, s6 of the Privacy Act 1993, upon request by Dr Wislang and in agreement with him as to their form”. The notifications were dated 9 December 2011 and were signed by Mr David Dunbar, the Registrar of the Medical Council of New Zealand.
